Download and upload

Download tests use random binary responses, cache-busting parameters, warmup and parallel connections. Upload tests generate random binary payloads in the browser. Mbps equals transferred bits divided by elapsed seconds divided by one million.

Latency and jitter

Latency is measured with repeated HTTP requests. It is explicitly not ICMP ping. Jitter is the average absolute difference between consecutive latency samples.

Privacy and aggregation

Speed results store a salted SHA-256 IP hash, not the raw IP. City and ISP aggregates must meet minimum real-sample rules before they become indexable. Results can vary with device, Wi-Fi, browser, server capacity and routing.
